Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek is a full Universes Beyond expansion combining Magic's strategic card game with characters, starships, locations and stories drawn from 60 years of Star Trek television and movies.
Instead of focusing on only one series, crew or version of the Enterprise, the set draws from across the wider Star Trek franchise. MTG Star Trek is not a small Secret Lair release. It is a complete, draftable, Standard-legal set with Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, four regular Commander decks, four premium Commander decks, Bundles, a Beginner Box, Draft Night and two Scene Boxes.
That means the release is intended for several audiences at once. Existing Magic players can draft the set and use its cards in Standard, Commander and other formats. Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek draws from 60 years of Star Trek television and movies. The set is not restricted to the original crew, The Next Generation or a single timeline.
Wizards' revealed cards and products already reference multiple generations, including Captain James T. Kirk, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Captain Kathryn Janeway, Seven of Nine, Beverly Crusher, Hoshi Sato, the Borg Queen, Q, the Klingons and different versions of Khan.
The product lineup also points toward a broad franchise-wide approach. The four Commander decks cover the Federation, landing teams, Klingons and the Borg, while the Scene Boxes include an Enterprise-Q scene and a Divergent Timeline scene.
Starships are equally important. Spacecraft and the returning station mechanic allow vessels such as the U.S.S. Enterprise-D to function as part of gameplay instead of appearing only in artwork.

The Stardates bonus sheet allows famous cards from Magic's history to receive new Star Trek artwork. One confirmed example is Sheoldred, the Apocalypse depicted as Khan, Engineered Evil from the Kelvin timeline. Wizards has also clarified that another version of Khan appears elsewhere in the release.
A Star Trek character appearing on the artwork of a reprint does not change that card's underlying name or rules. This distinction matters for deck building, format legality and card identification.
MTG Star Trek Mechanics Explained
The set introduces mechanics built around the Borg, difficult command decisions, cooperation among different species and the operation of starships. Wizards has officially revealed four major mechanics or mechanical themes.
Assimilate
Assimilate is a keyword action associated with the Borg. It either gives you control of a creature or puts a creature card onto the battlefield under your control. A +1/+1 counter is then placed on that creature.
The assimilated creature becomes a Borg artifact creature and loses its other creature types. This captures the Borg's ability to absorb individuals into the Collective while creating mechanical interaction with artifacts, counters, creature control and Borg-specific effects.
Face a Dilemma
A player faces a dilemma whenever that player chooses one or more modes for a spell or ability. Cards can trigger or provide additional benefits whenever such a decision is made.
The mechanic translates Star Trek's command decisions and moral choices into gameplay. It also interacts naturally with Magic cards that offer multiple modes, allowing a decision-focused deck to benefit from cards far beyond this set.
Federation
Federation is an ability word that rewards players for controlling multiple creature types among their non-Borg creatures. The more varied the crew, the greater the potential benefit.
This reflects the Federation's strength through cooperation among different species and civilizations. It may also make creature-type diversity an important consideration when building Federation Commander or Constructed decks.
Spacecraft and Station
Spacecraft and station return from Edge of Eternities. Spacecraft enter as artifacts. Players can add charge counters by stationing creatures aboard them, gradually unlocking additional abilities.
With enough charge counters, some Spacecraft become creatures capable of entering combat. The mechanic provides a natural way to represent captains and crew operating the Enterprise and other famous ships.
MTG Star Trek Special Cards and Booster Fun Treatments
Star Trek's visual history gives the set an unusually large range of collectible treatments. These include real actor signatures, LCARS frames, classic poster artwork, connected scenes and cards inspired by starship schematics.
Actor-Signed Headliner Cards
MTG Star Trek contains seven different actor-signed headliner cards. Each physical card was individually hand-signed by the actor who portrayed the featured Star Trek character.
Approximately 250 copies exist of each signed card. They can only appear in Collector Boosters. Signed cards may be inserted into Collector Boosters of any language, but the signed card itself is always printed in English.
These are authentic signed cards rather than printed signature reproductions. Wizards has shown signed headliner treatments for Captain James T. Kirk and Captain Kathryn Janeway among its first reveals.
Stardates Cards
Stardates cards combine powerful Magic reprints with artwork depicting Star Trek characters and moments. There are 30 Stardates cards.
Non-foil Stardates cards can appear in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters. Traditional foil versions are exclusive to Collector Boosters. In Play Boosters, a Stardates card replaces a common in approximately one out of every 25 packs.
LCARS Frame Cards and Shock Lands
LCARS cards use a frame inspired by the Library Computer Access and Retrieval System interface seen throughout Star Trek. The distinctive interface, colours and typography give these cards an immediately recognizable Starfleet appearance.
The release contains 29 LCARS frame cards and all ten shock lands in special LCARS frames. The shock lands show distant planetary landscapes and are particularly significant because the main TRK versions are Standard legal.
Non-foil and traditional foil LCARS cards appear in both booster types. Premium Surge Foil versions are exclusive to Collector Boosters.
Classic Enterprise Cards
Classic Enterprise cards use painterly artwork and a frame inspired by vintage Star Trek theatrical posters. There are 24 Classic Enterprise cards.
Non-foil and traditional foil versions appear in Play and Collector Boosters. Surge Foil versions are exclusive to Collector Boosters.
Borderless Scene Cards
Borderless Scene cards combine to form larger pieces of Star Trek artwork. The main booster set contains 25 Scene cards across four scenes, available in non-foil and traditional foil.
Two separate Scene Boxes provide six additional new-to-Magic scene cards each: Enterprise-Q and Divergent Timeline. Each card is playable individually, while all six can be arranged together as a complete display.
Beam Me Up Schematic Promos
The Beam Me Up Bundle contains two of eight possible traditional foil Spacecraft promo cards. These exclusive treatments present famous ships as technical schematics showing their abilities and design.

MTG Star Trek Commander Decks Explained
Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek includes four Commander decks, each available in a regular version and a premium Collector's Edition version:

Each regular deck contains 100 cards, including one traditional foil face commander with borderless art and 99 non-foil cards. Wizards has officially confirmed 32 new-to-Magic cards per deck, along with ten double-sided tokens, a reference card and a deck box.
Collector's Edition decks contain the same playable deck concept but upgrade the entire 100-card deck to Surge Foil. The face commander is a borderless Surge Foil, while the ten included tokens are Surge Foil on one side.
Which Star Trek Commander deck should you choose?
Complete decklists have not yet been published, so final recommendations should wait until Wizards reveals every card. Based on the officially announced identities, players can choose the faction or crew they most want to command:

- SDS: Stardates bonus-sheet cards

MTG Star Trek Prerelease events take place from November 6–12, 2026. Players open six Play Boosters and an included traditional foil rare or mythic rare promo, then build a 40-card Sealed deck.
The broader release season includes Commander Parties, Standard Showdown and Magic Presents: To Boldly Go, which runs from November 13, 2026 through January 28, 2027.
Commander event participants can receive Highly Illogical or Munitions Enthusiast promos, while Magic Presents participants can receive a traditional foil Solemn Simulacrum promo. Standard Showdown winners can receive a Burst Lightning promo or another card Wizards plans to reveal later. Promotional availability is limited.
Players who want to host a Limited event at home can use the Star Trek Draft Night kit. It contains everything required for a four-player Pick-Two Draft and includes a Collector Booster that can be awarded to the winner.
