Return of Dr. Sloth is an upcoming expansion for Upper Deck's modern Neopets Battledome Trading Card Game. It brings Dr. Frank Sloth and the world of Virtupets back to the centre of a physical Neopets card game while adding more than 200 new cards to the current Battledome TCG card pool.

The modern Battledome game uses Neopets as the central battlers, with players training them through Codestones, equipping them for combat and using cards such as Food, Faeries, Heroes, Villains, Legends, Petpets and Potions to shape each battle. Return of Dr. Sloth expands that system with new mechanical and collector-focused additions rather than simply reprinting the original 2004 Neopets TCG expansion of the same name.

The name itself carries more than twenty years of Neopets history. Wizards of the Coast previously released a Return of Dr. Sloth expansion for the original Neopets Trading Card Game in 2004, and Neopets later used the name for the major Return of Dr. Sloth online plot that ran in 2008.

A sealed Return of Dr. Sloth Booster Box contains 20 booster packs. Each booster pack contains 8 cards, giving a sealed display 160 cards across its packs before accounting for duplicates, foil versions and alternate-art variants.

What Is New in Return of Dr. Sloth?

Upper Deck's first official Return of Dr. Sloth teaser highlighted five major additions:

Return of Dr. Sloth Introduces a New Card Rarity

One of the biggest collector announcements is that Return of Dr. Sloth introduces a new card rarity to the Neopets Battledome TCG.

Upper Deck has not yet revealed the rarity's official name, appearance or pull rate. That makes it one of the most important details still waiting to be revealed before the December 15 release.

The product's pack configuration already includes a Super Rare or Higher slot. It is therefore possible that the new rarity will exist above an established rarity level, but Upper Deck has not yet confirmed exactly where it sits in the hierarchy.

What Is the Purple Base Neopet?

Upper Deck has specifically teased a Purple Base Neopet in Return of Dr. Sloth.

Base Neopet colours in Battledome are part of the actual game system rather than being purely cosmetic, so the introduction of Purple has the potential to create new deck-building and battle interactions.

The exact Neopet receiving the Purple treatment and the mechanical meaning of Purple have not yet been revealed. Until the complete card is shown, players should avoid assuming that Purple will simply copy the function of an existing colour or represent one specific stat.

Two New Teams Are Coming to Battledome TCG

Return of Dr. Sloth will introduce two new Teams.

Team icons can matter mechanically because Battledome card effects can reference them. Upper Deck's current rules, for example, give Hero and Villain cards Team Icons that may be checked by other effects.

The names and full identities of the two Return of Dr. Sloth Teams have not yet been announced. The expansion's Virtupets and Sloth theme gives players plenty to speculate about, but we will keep this guide to confirmed information until Upper Deck reveals the actual Teams.

Petpets and Petpet Battles in Return of Dr. Sloth

Return of Dr. Sloth includes Petpets and adds another Petpet for Battledome players and collectors to chase.

In the current Battledome rules, Petpets occupy an Equipment slot and a player can have only one Petpet in play at a time. During battle, a Petpet can contribute one of its Attack, Defence or Agility values to its Neopet under the rules governing Petpet use.

Upper Deck also supports a separate Petpet Battles format built around fast, best-of-one-round games. That means new Petpet cards can matter both in standard Battledome deck construction and in the dedicated Petpet format.

Return of Dr. Sloth Alternate Arts and Movie Poster Cards

Alternate art is one of the headline collector elements of Return of Dr. Sloth. Upper Deck's teaser explicitly calls out ALT ART, while product information also describes alternate movie-poster parody artwork inspired by classic, well-known films.

That gives the set a collector identity beyond simply pulling the highest rarity. Character popularity, artwork, scarcity and the eventual pull rates of these alternate versions are all likely to affect which cards emerge as the set's biggest chase cards.

What Are Grundo Warehouse Virtual Prize Cards?

Return of Dr. Sloth booster packs have a chance to contain a Grundo Warehouse virtual prize card. These physical cards connect the Battledome TCG opening experience back to Neopets.com through redeemable virtual prizes.

The Grundo Warehouse name also has an unusually fitting connection to this expansion. A Grundo Warehouse card appeared in the original Wizards of the Coast Return of Dr. Sloth expansion in 2004, while virtual prize code cards were also part of that original release era.

The exact virtual prize pool and odds for the 2026 Return of Dr. Sloth cards have not yet been publicly detailed.

Return of Dr. Sloth Card List: Confirmed Preview Names

The complete 200+ card checklist has not yet been revealed, but Upper Deck has already confirmed several card names that players can expect to find in the expansion.

Early Return of Dr. Sloth Gameplay Clues

Upper Deck's first teaser included partial card-effect text rather than complete cards. Those snippets do not tell us enough to build a reliable tier list, but they do give an early look at some of the mechanics the expansion may emphasize.

Based on those early snippets, Return of Dr. Sloth appears capable of supporting aggressive combat turns, card destruction, tutoring, resource disruption and combo-oriented gameplay.

That is only an early read. The actual competitive impact will depend on the complete card text, the two new Teams, the Purple Base Neopet, the new rarity cards and how the full expansion interacts with existing decks after release.

Dr. Frank Sloth is one of the defining villains of Neopets. His stories are strongly associated with conquest, Grundos, mutation, technology and the Virtupets Space Station, making him one of the most recognizable characters from Neopets' science-fiction side.

The name Return of Dr. Sloth has a particularly interesting history. Wizards of the Coast used it for the second expansion of the original Neopets Trading Card Game in 2004. Neopets had also planned a related storyline around that era, but the plot did not proceed as originally intended.

Years later, the Return of Dr. Sloth online plot finally arrived in January 2008. The storyline followed characters including Cylara and Gorix and featured the Virtupets Space Station, the Resistance, Grundos, puzzles, comics and multiple Battledome stages before concluding in March 2008.

That history gives Upper Deck a deep pool of characters, items and story references to revisit in the 2026 Battledome expansion. The first confirmed card names already show that the new set is leaning into those connections.

Is the 2026 Return of Dr. Sloth Set the Same as the 2004 Neopets TCG Set?

No. The 2026 Return of Dr. Sloth expansion is a new set for a completely different Neopets card game.

The original Neopets Trading Card Game: Return of Dr. Sloth was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2004 as the second expansion for the original Neopets TCG.

The new Neopets Battledome TCG: Return of Dr. Sloth is published by Upper Deck and belongs to the modern Battledome Trading Card Game.

The two releases may share characters, themes and references, but cards from the original Wizards of the Coast game are not cards for the modern Battledome TCG.
